Day 1
To begin this experience, we depart from the office or hotel, then visit the Train Cemetery located on the outskirts of the city of Uyuni. Afterward, we head toward the village of Colchani, whose main activity is salt harvesting, where we will visit a salt processing factory. We are now at the gateway to the immense Uyuni Salt Flat; in the first kilometers we will find natural water springs, salt harvesting areas, and the world’s first salt hotel, Playa Blanca, which today is an open museum. It is time to travel along the salt highway for about 70 km to visit the Incahuasi Island, located in the center of the salt flat, where we will see enormous cacti and Andean vegetation, and we will be able to reach the summit to enjoy a spectacular 360º view. Next, we head toward the northern coast of the salt flat, where the beautiful Thunupa Volcano is located. Along its shores we will see a contrast of colors—greenish grasslands where llamas feed, the volcano’s crater in the distance with reddish and yellowish tones of minerals and volcanic rock, and of course the white of the immense salt flat. Finally, we continue to the village of Tahua, accommodation in a salt hotel.
Day 2
With the first rays of sunlight, we depart toward the Chiquini Cave, where beautiful sedimented formations from ancient lakes can be appreciated. Next, we head to the community of Coqueza, to the first viewpoint of the volcano by vehicle, where we will find the cave of the mummies, who were ancient inhabitants of the region. We then begin the ascent along a trail toward the Chatahuana viewpoint for approximately
One hour, where we will be able to appreciate a beautiful view of the crater of the Thunupa Volcano and the immensity of the salt flat. We then re-enter the salt flat to head toward the village of Colchani and later to the city of Uyuni.
